What is NDIS?

What Is NDIS

National Disability Insurance Scheme

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a long-term, sustainable and flexible funding arrangement that will replace the existing disability services system in Australia. The NDIS will be rolled out in stages over time as part of an innovative approach to supporting people with disabilities and their families.

The NDIS is not like other government programs or initiatives, but rather it’s designed to provide support for all Australians who live with a disability so they can participate fully in everyday life. This includes being able to work or study, enjoy leisure activities and live independently at home if necessary.

What supports will the NDIS fund?

The NDIS will fund support to help you do the things you want and need to do. For example, if you have a disability that affects your ability to dress yourself or wash yourself, the NDIS may provide funding for aids like clothes hangers or baths that can help with this daily living activity.

The NDIS also provides funding for social activities such as going out with friends or meeting up with family members. This helps people who are lonely because they don’t have anyone else in their lives anymore because of their disabilities

Comfort Support Care is a renowned NDIS provider that provides services for physical, cognitive and sensory impairments. We provide 24/7 support and work with you to ensure that your plan is implemented to the highest standard.

Are you eligible for the NDIS?

To be eligible to apply for the NDIS, you must meet the following criteria:
To be aged between 7 and 65 years and have a significant disability, illness or injury. This means that your ability to live independently and perform basic tasks is significantly impaired by your condition. It does not need to be permanent; it can be caused by an ongoing medical condition such as cancer or diabetes that affects daily living activities like eating, dressing and bathing
Have a plan that is being funded under the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). The plan has been approved by Department of Social Services (DSS) staff based on information provided by you when applying for funding under this scheme. For more information about how DSS handles these applications see our guide: How do I apply for funding from my local area office?

How to access NDIS?

If you are a person with an intellectual disability and want to access the NDIS, it is important that you talk with your doctor about what support options are available. Your doctor can refer you to a specialist who can give more detailed advice about the NDIS and how it will help make your life easier.

What does the NDIS fund?

The NDIS will fund the following supports:

What doesn’t the NDIS fund?

The NDIS does not cover the following:

The NDIS also does not pay for recreational or leisure activities such as bowling and swimming lessons in addition to household repairs like painting your house or replacing ceiling tiles because these services would be classified as ‘personal assistance’ under the scheme’s guidelines.
